Columbus man charged in attempted Decatur County escape

Miami County, In. — A Columbus man has been charged in an assault during an attempted escape in Decatur County.

On August 30, 2017 Joshua B. Stam, 26, was being transported from the Miami County Correctional Facility for a court appearance in Decatur County. Stam allegedly freed himself from handcuffs and attacked a sheriff’s deputy waiting in a transport vehicle. Reports say Stam choked the officer and attempted to take his service weapon.

As the inmate was getting the upper hand on the officer, a passerby witnessed the struggle, and alerted two Indiana Department of Correction auto maintenance employees, who were working in a nearby  building. The two employees ran to the officer’s aid, stopping the alleged attack, and preventing Stam from escaping.

The officer was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Stam has been charged with attempted escape, attempted murder, aggravated battery and battery resulting injury to a public safety officer. Stam is being held in the segregation unit at the Miami County Correctional Facility.
