Busy Weekend for Area Firefighters

(Southeastern IN) – It was a busy weekend for area firefighters.

Crews from New Marion and Versailles were called to a house fire on U.S. 421 in Rexville.

They were able to quickly knock down the flames, and the home sustained minor damage.

There were no injuries reported.

The cause and damage estimate were not listed.

Responding agencies included the New Marion Volunteer Fire Department, Versailles Fire Rescue, Ripley County EMS and the Ripley County Sheriff’s Office.

Tankers from the Otter Creek (Holton) and Friendship volunteer fire departments were dispatched but those crews were told to disregard before they arrived on scene.

Meanwhile, Versailles Fire Rescue dealt with several brush fires along State Road 129 south of town and up to Main Street.

Five separate fires were put out along the way.

Investigators say sparks from tires and wheels on a trailer ignited the dry ground and caused the brush fires.

Firefighters received assistance from the Versailles Police Department, Ripley County Sheriff’s Office, South Ripley School Resource Officer, and Indiana State Police.

And an improperly discarded cigarette is being blamed for causing a dumpster fire Sunday morning behind the Dollar General store in Greensburg Crossing.
