Betty Cord, 92, of Versailles passed away at 7p.m., Monday, March 27, 2023 at her home. She was born in Madison on October 16, 1930, the daughter of Theodore and Elizabeth Wolfschlog Winkel. She was married to Jerry Cord on August 1, 1959, and he preceded her in death on February 22, 1992. Survivors include two sons Mike Cord of Versailles and David Cord of Helsinki, Finland; one daughter Marita (David) Mergenthal of Batesville; one brother Joe Winkel of Georgia; three sisters Dorothy Winkel of Hanover and Dolores Spoonmore and Carolyn Smith both of Madison; her brother-in-law Charlie Torline of Madison. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her brother Ted, and her sisters Cathy, Rosemary, and Mary Margaret Winkel, and Martha Torline. Mrs. Cord was a 1948 graduate of Madison High School. Betty’s working career spanned many years having had employment with the Madison State Hospital, Pearl Packing Company in Madison, and the Madison Bank and Trust Company. She also worked as a secretary for Gene Cofield Insurance and Jesse Taul Accounting both in Versailles, as well as serving as a secretary for the Versailles Town Court. Betty was very involved in her community and church, serving as secretary/treasurer for the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles as well as the St. John Cemetery in Osgood for many years. She was a member of the former Correct Homemakers Club and had served as president of Home Economic Clubs both in Ripley County as well as regionally. She was an avid prayer warrior and kept a prayer journal of over 100 names of people she prayed for daily up to just two weeks ago. She enjoyed encouraging family and friends by making and sending them cards. She was well known for her cut-out sugar cookies and other baked goods and also loved to crochet, gifting 100’s of afghans and dish towels that she had made. She also volunteered her time as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader in both Madison and Versailles. Betty was a member of the St. John Catholic Church in Osgood where she participated in the ladie’s club and also helped with secretarial duties. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 1 at the St. John Catholic Church in Osgood with Father Binu Mathew officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will also be at the church on Saturday beginning at 10 a. m. Memorials may be given to the Cliff Hill Cemetery in care of the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles.
