(Batesville, IN) – On October 23 and 24, students from Southeastern Indiana gathered for an exciting introduction to the world of special effects makeup at the first “Backstage Pass” Theater Camp.
This two-evening event, held at Kids Discovery Factory in Batesville, gave young aspiring artists the chance to explore FX makeup techniques, airbrushing, and other theatrical makeup applications.
This camp is the first in a series of seven, sponsored by Hillenbrand Inc.’s Partner with Possibility Fund through the Ripley County Community Foundation.
Co-organized by the Batesville Area Arts Council (BAAC) and Kids Discovery Factory, the Backstage Pass series is designed to offer children ages 5-14 an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the Science, Technology, Art, Engineering, and Math (STEAM) that powers theater productions. These mini-camps aim to engage young learners in hands-on activities that reveal the magic and craftsmanship behind the stage.
“Special Effects Makeup Camp was a thrilling way to kick off the Backstage Pass series,” said Vanessa Beetz, Program Director. “Students were able to experiment with professional techniques and materials. Local artist Lori Voegele did a wonderful job sharing her craft.”
The Backstage Pass series will continue with a variety of themed camps throughout the year, including:
Sound Effects Camp, Wild About Writing Camp, Set Design Camp, Puppet Play Camp, and a Graphic Design Breakout (during the Kids Discovery Factory’s Annual STEAM Camp in July 2025).
Each camp is designed to introduce children to the fascinating STEAM elements behind theater production, providing an opportunity to discover new passions while working alongside professionals in the field.
“So many theater camps focus on the on-stage experience, but there is a world of creativity behind the scenes. The goal of these camps is to give kids a glimpse of that world and to inspire curiosity,” added Melissa Moenter, BAAC executive director. “By showcasing the science and art of stagecraft, we’re giving kids a deeper appreciation for theater while also introducing them to a wide range of creative and technical skills.”
Registration for upcoming camps in the Backstage Pass series will open soon, and interested families are encouraged to find more information at: https://www.kidsdiscoveryfactory.org/backstage.
