GREENSBURG, IN — The Greensburg/Decatur County Bicentennial official kickoff event Wednesday afternoon at the Rebekah Park Amphitheater featured a World Series champion and former Cincinnati Reds pitcher.

Bronson Arroyo told WRBI’s Bryce Kendrick that his visit to the Tree City was fantastic.

“I was over at the high school and had a really intimate hour-and-a-half talk with the kids, all 750 kids in the school,” Arroyo said. “The sound system in there was fantastic. I got to play them some music and just talk about my career and just try to give back.”

Arroyo said while baseball was his first love, he stressed the importance of the arts.

“A lot of times you’re showing up to places where you’re trying to make some sort of impact, especially with younger kids, and obviously culture is big in small towns,” Arroyo said. “To come out here for the Bicentennial and they’re going to be playing music on this same stage…it’s always fun to get out and have something good to do for towns and for people to come out and enjoy themselves.”

Arroyo strummed a couple of songs on his guitar, posed for pictures, and signed autographs during his visit to the Tree City as he helped hype a summer of Bicentennial-related musical events.

He spent 16 years in the Major Leagues, including nine with the Reds, and compiled a record of 148-137 with 1,571 strikeouts. While with the Reds, Arroyo was an All-Star in 2006 and won a Gold Glove in 2010.

The Greensburg/Decatur County Bicentennial features 50-plus events throughout the year – some of which have already taken place.

The schedule includes 15 concerts, the Bicentennial parade on June 11, films, lectures, and more.
