Alvin M. Schebler, age 80 of Green Valley, Arizona, formerly of Batesville, Indiana, passed away Sunday, February 25, 2024, at his home. Born November 8, 1943, in Batesville, he is the son of Millard and Stella (Nobbe) Schebler. He married Ada Davis on December 13, 2014, in New Point, Indiana.
Al attended St. Louis Catholic School and graduated in the Class of 1957 and then continued his education at Batesville High School. He graduated in the Class of 1961, despite being hospitalized at Silvercrest Sanatorium in New Albany, Indiana for 15 months with tuberculosis. Al was a member of the Batesville Jaycees, the Batesville Promotional Association, and the Hillcrest Country Club for 29 years.
Al was an entrepreneur, having owned and managed several businesses throughout his career. He worked at the Harmeyer Grocery Store from 1957 – 1960 and Nolte’s Drug Store from 1960 – 1961. He started working at the Westgate IGA Food Liner in 1962 as a bagger for Gilbert Munchel. He worked his way up and co-owned the business for 15 years until he sold it in 1982. He then held the position of General Manager at Nobbe Motor Sales from 1983 – 1987 and then started his own business, Al Schebler’s Used Cars until 1993. He was hired on by Batesville Chrysler shortly thereafter as a salesman, until he retired in 2006. Some of the other business ventures that he was involved in was owner and manager of the S.M.S. Corp (Rental Building) from 1972 – 2004, The Zap (A Family Fun Center) from 1982 – 1984, The Cobbler Shop and Sales from 1974 – 1977, and a Car Lot and Building from 1987 – 2003.
In addition to his many business ventures, he loved to play golf in his younger years. He also loved to take care of his yard and had a green thumb when it came to all of his flower gardens. He spent many winters in Arizona and traveled back in the summers to spend time with his girls. He moved there permanently in November of 2017.
He is survived by his wife Ada of Green Valley, Arizona; daughters Tricia (Dan) Perdue and Tonia (Chris) Poe, all of Batesville and Tara (Jessie Brown) Meyers of New Castle, Indiana; son-in-law Joe Wethington of Ross, Ohio; the mother of his children, Connie (Peters) Schebler; grandchildren Jessica and Josie Wethington, Toni (Ben) Becker, Cody Perdue, Kory Ryan, Evan Meyers, Nolan and Shaylin Brown; great grandchildren Daxton and Tinley Becker; step children William Thorp of Indianapolis, Indiana, Vicki (Chuck Billingsly) Meadows and Allen (Jackie) Meadows, all of Greensburg; step grandchildren Joe Johnson, Kaitlynn Grank, Evan Brasier, Lilyann Brasier, Sofie Meadows, Lyric, Emma, Will, and Mabel Thorp; sister Carolyn “Sis” Heppner of Murrieta, California; brothers Kevin Schebler of Osgood, Indiana and Randy Schebler of Batesville. In addition to his parents, Al was preceded in death by his daughter Tina Wethington, grandson Baby Ray Ryan, and brothers Carl, Wilbur, and Edgar Schebler.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 6th from 4 – 7 p.m., at Weigel Funeral Home in Batesville. A Mass of Christian Burial is being held Thursday, March 7th at 11 a.m., at St. Louis Catholic Church in Batesville, with Fr. Stan Pando officiating. The burial will follow in the church cemetery.
