Alleged theft on I-74 leaves one in custody/one injured

Greensburg, IN — Shortly around 4 pm this afternoon, a man on I-74 west-bound near the 136-mile marker attempted to steal a trailer hauling a boat that had been broken down on the side of the interstate. Witnesses called 911 to report the alleged theft.

Decatur County Sheriff Deputies were dispatched to the scene, and an alleged altercation ensued between the deputy and the alleged thief. The deputy tased the man but the man was able to flee the scene in a vehicle before being apprehended further down I-74 by the Honda interchange.

While the police chase was taking place, a bystander on I-74 with the trailer was hit by a passing vehicle. The 74-year-old man is said to have injuries to his thigh, chest, and hands and Stat Flight was called to the scene for transport to St. Vincent Hospital for treatment. I-74 westbound was closed for the transport of the victim by helicopter.

Those working both scenes include the Decatur County Sheriff Office, Greensburg Police Department, Decatur County EMS, and the Greensburg Fire Department.
