Gerard (Jerry) Joseph Hughes, age 84 of New Alsace, died Monday, April 11, 2016 at his home. Born August 18, 1931 in New Alsace, son to the late Thomas W. and Henrietta A. (nee: Schnied) Hughes. He was united in marriage to Alice M Wuestefeld on April 28, 1956 at St. Joseph’s Church in St. Leon, Indiana. (17 days shy of 60 years)
Jerry after Graduating from Guilford High School in 1950, served in the U.S. Army during the Korean war, when he came home he met his wife at a dance in Cedar Grove. He worked as a Boiler/Fireman both off and on at Seagram’s and finally retired at Schenley Distillers in Lawrenceburg. He was a member of the New Alsace American Legion Post 452, the Eagles, and Knights of Columbus.
In his spare time he loved to garden, bowl, fish, hunt, make crafts and jellies, watch all kinds of sports, but enjoyed the Red’s, Bengal’s and Xavier Basketball, and if he could not watch them he would listen to them on his little radio, sit outside and watch for airplanes. He loved to read westerns and tried his hand at writing; he wrote 21 short stories for his family and friends to enjoy.
He is survived by his wife Alice, 3 sons; Randy Hughes, Larry Hughes both of Sunman and Tom (Debbie) Hughes of Batesville and 2 daughters; Pam (the late William Gary) Hoover and Judy (Ted) Meyer both of Batesville. Jerry had 13 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and 5 step great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Maxine (the late Mike) Klump of New Alsace.
Visitation is Friday, April 15th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. with rosary at 4:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday at 11:00 a.m., St. Martins Church in Yorkville. The Burial will follow with military rites at St. Paul’s Cemetery in New Alsace. The family request memorials to Safe Passage, New Alsace Legion Post 452 or St. Paul’s School.
