(Franklin County, IN) – High levels of E. coli have forced the closing of the Mounds Beach at Brookville Lake to swimmers.
Indiana State Parks says weekly water test results showed high levels of E. coli, which is bacteria found in the environment, foods, and intestines of people and animals.
Higher than normal levels happen occasionally as the result of sampling procedure, or as the result of an increase in nutrients in the water after a heavy rain.
There is no time frame for when the Mounds Beach will reopen.
Officials say this is different from the program that provides alert levels for blue-green algae.
Beaches at Whitewater Memorial State Park in Union County and Quakertown State Recreation Area at Brookville Lake remain open for swimming.
