(Batesville, IN) – The Batesville Memorial Public Library (BMPL) held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Arts and Innovation Hub Thursday afternoon.
The multi-million dollar, 8,3000-square-foot facility will include a 200-person meeting room, maker space, an audio/visual recording area, meeting and collaboration spaces, reading and study rooms, and a first – an office for the Batesville Area Arts Council.
The outside will include an event lawn and gathering plaza.
The project is being funded by a $2 million READI grant, $6.1 million in bond sales, plus grants and donations.
An estimated $186,000 has been raised through donations and grants. The goal is $500,000.
Library Board of Directors president Mark Stenger served as emcee before the first ceremonial spades of dirt were turned.
“The Arts & Innovation Hub will be a space where creativity and community thrive—designed to
empower learners, makers, and innovators across our region,” said library Executive Director Kim Porter.
The project is a collaborative initiative between the library, local schools, arts organizations, and
nonprofits, aimed at strengthening STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics)
education, boosting small business development, and supporting career exploration and mentorship
opportunities.
The Hub is considered a key part of the City of Batesville’s downtown revitalization strategy and is
expected to attract regional talent and investment while enhancing quality of life for the community.
“This groundbreaking marks more than the start of construction—it represents a bold investment in
Batesville’s future,” said Batesville Mayor John Irrgang. “The Batesville Arts & Innovation Hub will be a
place where people of all ages come together to learn, create, and grow.”
Remarks were also delivered by Paul Satchwill on behalf of the Batesville Area Arts Council, and David Rainey with Veridus Group, which is the owner representative for the project.
The facility is scheduled to open in 2026.
