Batesville, IN – The Batesville Bulldogs JV and Varsity faced off against the Greensburg Pirates on Friday night in Batesville’s season opener.
To start off the night, a competitive JV game kept the crowd on their seats and ready for the marquee varsity matchup. Greensburg found success in the first quarter where they jumped out to an 11-5 lead. Their offense then really sparked in the second quarter, scoring 17 to the Bulldogs 9.
The Bulldogs weren’t done yet, a back and forth third quarter kept them within striking distance. Both teams scoring 12 each coming out of the half. Batesville kept fighting all throughout the game behind Levi Hunt and Braydin Hughes’ 12 points. They outscored the Pirates 14-11 in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough. The JV Pirates claim victory, 51-40.
Other scorers for the Bulldogs were Cole Abrams with 9 points, Camden Kaiser added 4 points, Preston Blessing with 2, and Winston Garrett with 1.
The varsity followed straight after the JV concluded and it didn’t disappoint either.
Things started off competitive as Batesville clinged to a 9-8 lead with 4 minutes left in the first quarter. A back and forth first quarter led to a 15-14 lead for Batesville headed into the second quarter. The Bulldogs defense forced a few turnovers and bad shots to build their lead to 29-19, also forcing a Pirate timeout. Offensive was provided via Brayden Maple and Trenton Luers as was the whole night.
Batesville found themselves with a fairly comfortable lead going into the locker room, 32-21 in favor of the Bulldogs.
25 points from Trenton Luers and 24 from Brayden Maple proved to be too much for Greensburg to handle in the end. Batesville controlled most of the second half and kept that lead right where they needed to. Final score, 63-51 Bulldogs get a big win against their rival.
Greensburg’s Jacoby Miller found a nice spark of offense this game, scoring 17 points and Senior Jack McKinsey had a very solid outing with 14 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists.
Batesville will host Lawrenceburg in their second game of the season on December 13, with the tipoff coming at 6:00 PM.
