(Rising Sun, IN) – The Rising Sun Police Department will soon be no more.
The force will cease to exist on March 2, after Rising Sun City Council adopted an ordinance of dissolution this week.
As a result of the move, all law enforcement in the City of Rising Sun will be transferred to the Ohio County Sheriff’s Office.
That agency is expecting to take in the remaining Rising Sun officers and employees.
Rising Sun PD struggled to hire and retain officers in recent years for a variety of reasons, and operated without a permanent chief for nearly five years.
Former Chief David Hewitt died in a crash in 2019 and the interim police chief retired not long afterward.
The next interim chief was Harlis Steven Hoover Jr., who is on administrative leave, facing a 17-felony count indictment on bribery, fraud, official misconduct, theft and ghost employment charges.
Before city council’s action this week, the merger agreement was approved by Ohio County Commissioners.
