Weekend Local Sports Results

After a busy opening week of 2020-2021, Volleyball season the Jac-Cen-Del Lady Eagles hosted cross-county rivals, South Ripley Raiders. The Eagles came out and after a back and forth game took the first set 25-19. The second set was also competitive with South Ripley taking it 25-22. JCD came back to win the third and fourth sets with identical scores of 25-22.

The Batesville Boys Soccer team traveled to Franklin County high school for a Saturday Morning match-winning 15-0.

The Bulldogs controlled the field and made combination passes to find their way to the goal 10 times in the first half. JJ Kuisel, Kent Meyers, Ian Powers, Eli Pierson, and Cody Sims all put up goals on the scoreboard. The second half the starters set the tone in possession and switched for the younger players to finish off the half. Second-half goals came from junior Eli Pierson and then-freshman Sebbie Trainor, Owen Powers, and Noah Pierson.

The Greensburg Lady Pirates traveled to Union County to secure their third win of the season 1-0. Both teams defenses kept the game at 0-0 until late in the second half.

Greensburg Keeper Ella Lowe managed to keep the 9 on-target shots from Union County out of the net. The only point of the game came from one of Lowe’s punts out of the goal, setting up Kaly Haycock for a pass-through Union County’s defensive line to Emily Rosales who settled the ball in their opponent’s goal.

Greensburg Lady Pirates travel to Batesville to match up against a local rival on Thursday at 5 p.m. This latest win brings their record to 3-1.

The Batesville Lady Bulldogs finished 5th in the 14-team Connersville Invitational on Saturday at Willowbrook GC.  

Team Scores. Franklin County 372, Zionsville 374, Richmond 377, Noblesville 379, Batesville 380, Fishers 392, Park Tudor 396, Yorktown 397, Connersville 399, Lawrenceburg 441, Union County 458, Centerville 482, Jennings County 488, North Decatur 533. 

Emma Weiler continues her domination in local invitational winning by nine strokes with a school-record even-par round of 72 Other scores for Batesville were Josie Meyer 88, Rhea Miller, and Madelyn Pohlman with 110, and Tori Harpring 114.   

Batesville next plays at Hillcrest Monday evening against South Dearborn.

The North Decatur Lady Chargers placed 14th overall with a team score of 533.

The Franklin County lady Wildcats Golf finished in 2nd place at the Connersville Invite with a score of 372. The Wildcats continued to play well in the tough 14 team field.

The Golf team will be back in action Tuesday vs East Central.

The Batesville Lady Bulldogs traveled to Shelbyville High Saturday and suffered their first defeat of the season. It was just not our day. Hopefully, we got all of that out of our system as we start the week of playing for conference games.   

JV lost 25-253 and 25- 21.  
Top servers were Belle Westerfeld 11/11, Kennedy Westrick 8/8, and Kaylie Raver 7/7. Kaylie led the tell in kills with 4.   

Varsity lost 25-13, 25-16, 25-17.

The East Central Lady Trojans Volleyball team traveled to Southport to Battle The Lady Cardinals. What would normally be their annual invitational, turned into a single JV/Varsity match-up this year. While our JV fought hard to the final point, they fell to the Cardinals 2-0. Varsity won with the scores of 16-25, 25-20, 25-17, & 30-28.

‘We started off slow and very unimpressive. We handed Southport the win with 22 errors in that set alone. After regrouping and working together as a team, we managed to come back and win the next three sets. It turned into a great match. It was fun to watch and be a small part of. Both teams put up a strong fight and refused to give up. The effort and grit we showed definitely carried us through in crunch time.’ Trojans Coach Cassie Laker.  

Varsity is 2-1 on the season. Next up: all three teams are at Rushville on Tuesday.

The Franklin County Varsity Lady Cats fell to Connersville in 4 sets Saturday afternoon  23-25, 25-15, 25-13, 25-18.

‘We fought hard in set 1 after being down 5-12 and came back to take that set. The next 3 sets were played out neck in neck with Connersville taking all 3. ‘Wildcats Coach Jill Mergenthal.’

Kylie Lea had 4 ace serves and 8 digs. Kassidy Schell had 1 ace serve, 10 kills, 9 digs and 10 assists. Kacie Williams had 1 ace serve, 5 digs and 9 assists. Alex Gillman had 1 ace serve and 2 digs. Kim had 1 kill and digs. Jenna Bruns had 3 kills, 1 block, and 4 digs. Saige Mergenthal had 4 kills, 1 block and 1 dig. Meredith Hoff had 2 kills, 2 blocks and 1 dig. Kim Settles had 15 digs. Rae Ertel had 1 dig.

The JV Lady Cats hosted Connersville Saturday afternoon and won in 2 sets 25-17, 25-18. Hadlee Hornsby had 2 kills and 1 ace serve. Kiersten Schell had 4 kills, 1ace serve and 1 block. Laney Smith had 2 blocks. Stephanie Billman had 4 ace serves and 5 assists. Lauren Stacy had 2 kills and 1 ace serve. Brooke Bruns had 1 kill. Macy Crain had 2 blocks. Michaela Ferman had 4 ace serves and 3 assists. We will be back on the court at home against Batesville on Tuesday, Aug.25th.
