Batesville, Ind. —More than 35 residents came to the Batesville Middle School to learn about the city’s comprehensive plan Tuesday night. Planning Commission member Dave Raver said the plan sets priorities in order for the city to prepare for opportunities and properly direct financial resources to secure them.
The plan specifically identifies strengths, weaknesses and provides a road map to responsibly grow and improve the city.
The goals of the plan are to improve and expand housing options, keep existing businesses while attracting new businesses, find ways to make the downtown area more inviting and vibrant, stem the flow of young residents from the community and find ways to attract more 20 and 39-year-olds and improve infrastructure. The bottom line- Promote and market the community with the goal of adding more residents, more workers and more visitors.
Creating an active community is also a prominent part of the Batesville roadmap of the future. Finding ways to add bike/walking paths that accessible to residents, the elderly and disabled included and that coexist safely with main thoroughfares like I-74 and State Roads 46, 229 and 129.
The plan encourages responsible growth. Aspects of the plan address responsible zoning strategies to balance growth and maintain the small town feel so many residents value.
The planning commission, city officials and consultants have been working on the plan for about two years. The plan is available online at batesvilleindiana.us/. Public comment is encouraged.
