Mary Shockey, 92, Versailles

Mary E. Shockey, 92, of Versailles passed away at 3:40pm, Sunday, January 6, 2019 at the Southpointe Health Center in Indianapolis. She was born near Elrod on September 18, 1926 the daughter of Raymond and Sylvia Roberts Boyd. She was married to Arnold Shockey on October 20, 1945 and he preceded her in death on March 15, 1997. Survivors include one son Charles (Linda) Shockey of Indianapolis; two grandchildren Eric (Tammy) Shockey and Holly (Charles) Lindsay of Indianapolis; 9 great- grandchildren; one sister Fern Day of Richmond, Kentucky, and special friend Anita Morris of Milan. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her brother Estell Boyd, and her sisters Edna Shockey and Irma Bavis. Mrs. Shockey was a 1945 graduate of Versailles High School. She was employed with the Amos Jackson Abstract Company in Versailles in 1953 and served as Ripley County Deputy Recorder from 1963 to 1970. In 1971 she became the co-owner of the Ripley County Abstract Company, a position she held until her retirement in 1997. Mary loved to cook for her family, especially baking at the holidays. She was an accomplished seamstress and made many Afghans as well as clothes for members of her family. Mary was a former member of the Busy Bees Home Economics Club at Elrod and was a long time member of the Washington Baptist Church at Elrod. Funeral services will be held at 2pm Wednesday, January 9th at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Bruce Fitzsimmons of the Washington Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Washington Cemetery. Visitation will also be on Wednesday beginning at 12pm. Memorials may be given to the Washington Cemetery in care of the funeral home.
