For the second time in program history the Xavier Musketeers are National Invitational Tournament Champions. Thursday night at Madison Square Garden in New York, second seeded X beat top seeded Texas A&M 73-72.
On the 17th lead change of the game, the Muskies Jack Nunge hit the game winning basket on a turn-and-shoot in the paint with 3.1 to play.
Xavier’s other NIT title came in 1958.
For the Aggies, who largely were considered a snubb by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, made a great run winning all previous tournament games by at least 12 points.
