WRBI, 5 Oaks Team Up for Giant Veggie Contest

(Batesville, IN) – WRBI and 5 Oaks Garden Center in Batesville teamed up for the 20th year for the Giant Veggie Contest.

Janet Sagester won the sweet potatoes category with an entry weighing six pounds, eight ounces.

In the squash contest, Tony Veldhaus eked out the win with a vegetable weighing eight pounds, 15 ½ ounces. Veldhaus’ squash tipped the scales a mere half-pound more than the closest competitor’s.

Joe Mehlon’s tomato weighed in at two pounds, 10 ½ ounces, while a potato raised by Dustin Wessell came in at one pound, 14 ½ ounces.

5 Oaks co-owner Matt Nobbe says no one entered the radish competition this year.

The first WRBI/5 Oaks Garden Center Giant Veggie Contest was held in 2005.
