Next month is fire prevention month, and as a retired firefighter, I cannot stress enough the importance of implementing a fire safety plan. Unfortunately, seven people in the United States dies in home fires each day. Every second counts, which is why a fire safety plan is imperative to preventing you and your loved ones from becoming a statistic.

STATEHOUSE (Sept. 21, 2017) – Local communities will receive state matching grants to improve roads and bridges, according to State Rep. Randy Frye (R-Greensburg).

As of July, the state and our local unemployment rate stood at 3.4 percent, which is well below the national average of 4.3 percent. More Hoosiers are working today than ever before, but we are facing another challenge of filling open positions with skilled workers.

STATEHOUSE (Aug. 28, 2017) – Indiana House Republicans are now accepting internship applications for the 2018 legislative session, according to State Rep. Randy Frye (R-Greensburg).

Indiana’s unemployment rate is 3.1 percent, which is one of the lowest rates in the nation. In order to keep up this momentum with the ever-changing technology and job market, Hoosiers need to be prepared to meet the increased demands of employers that are locating and expanding here. I recently joined Gov. Eric Holcomb when he visited Batesville and Madison to launch the Next Level Jobs initiative. This initiative provides Hoosiers access to new resources to secure advanced and better-paying jobs, and gives employers additional tools to help fill positions in high-demand fields.

Many drivers have started to encounter orange barrels, closed road signs and construction crews in our area. All of this is the beginning phase of Indiana’s five-year ‘Next Level Roads’ initiative. Even though construction means closures and traffic delays, let’s look down the road to a smoothly paved future benefiting Hoosier communities.

These past few weeks, I have visited seven county fairs in our area. Hopefully, you were also able to enjoy all of the local food and 4-H projects. With many schools starting this week, the summer fun doesn’t have to come to an end.

STATEHOUSE (July 19, 2017) – State Rep. Randy Frye (R-Greensburg) is asking Hoosier employers to help identify duplicative or redundant state reporting requirements using a new online portal.

The state offers multiple free resources available through a phone call or the click of a mouse. These resources can help with finding a job, locating unclaimed property or registering for a hunting license, among other things. A one-stop shop for many of these resources can be found online at www.in.gov, the state’s comprehensive website.

This week, we celebrate our country’s 241^st birthday. This time of year always brings out the patriot in us all, with fervent pride in the country we call home. It has become a tradition to memorialize this holiday with parades, cookouts and fireworks. As we celebrate, let’s remember to put safety first.

Indiana’s state motto is The Crossroads of America. Some historians say this is due to Indianapolis being the hub of several major interstate highways that criss-cross Indiana and connect Hoosiers to the rest of the U.S. Others say Highways 40 and 41 opened the West for settlement and were designated as part of the original federal highway system in 1926. The intersection of these two highways in Terre Haute became the Crossroads of America. Either way, we have been labeled as such, and with thousands of out-of-state motorists traveling our roadways, it makes sense to support a user-pays approach when developing a system for improving our infrastructure.

I hope everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend. The last weekend in May symbolizes the kick-off to summer. Some of us enjoyed cookouts, parades, the Indy 500, swimming and just relaxing with family and friends. However, we need to remember what the true meaning is behind Memorial Day.

Lawmakers recently concluded business for this year’s legislative session. As policymakers, we worked to pass new laws improving Indiana’s infrastructure and funding state operations for the next two years, including supporting education.

Planting season is here for many Hoosier farmers. As the weather warms up in Indiana, drivers may notice more farming equipment on the roads.

STATEHOUSE (March 28, 2017) – State Rep. Randy Frye (R-Greensburg) at the Statehouse this week led the Indiana House of Representatives in honoring a local hero who saved a fellow Hoosier’s life by performing CPR.

As a retired firefighter, I often responded to the scene of car accidents. These are intense situations that sadly, sometimes resulted in death. Last summer, a teenager was in a car accident and had to be airlifted to the hospital. His mother was only six miles from the wreck and did not receive a call notifying her of the situation until six hours later.

A few of the issues lawmakers are addressing this legislative session include passing the state’s biennial budget, enacting a comprehensive road funding plan and tackling Indiana’s drug epidemic. Another piece of legislation that has a significant local impact concerns the revenue coming from the three riverboats located in the region.

Each year, the Indiana House of Representatives provides opportunities to college students and recent graduates to participate in the legislative process at the Statehouse while gaining hands-on experience through paid internships. Currently, there are two students interning with me as they prepare to enter the workforce.

The state of Indiana functions on a biennial budget. Every two years, lawmakers work together to pass a law outlining appropriations for Medicaid, higher education, health services, public safety, general government, capital projects and K-12 education. My goal for the next state budget is to make sure we keep it responsibly balanced and remain prudent with taxpayer’s money, while adequately funding vital services like education and public safety. 

STATEHOUSE (Jan. 24, 2017) – The House Committee on Veterans Affairs and Public Safety today approved State Rep. Randy Frye’s (R-Greensburg) proposal that would provide funding for the Indiana Fire Academy. 

As a member of the House Committee on Roads and Transportation and a user of Indiana’s roads and bridges, I know our state needs a long-term investment plan to maintain and improve our roads. One of my goals this session is to support a sustainable and comprehensive funding solution that will keep Indiana’s infrastructure functioning for years to come.

The Indiana House of Representatives offers a hands-on learning experience through its page program. This program helps our young Hoosiers understand how laws are made in Indiana.

The Indiana House of Representatives will reconvene for the 2017 session on Jan. 4. Some of the matters I want to see addressed by the General Assembly is keeping Indiana as one of the best states to do business, having a long-term sustainable plan to fund Hoosier roads, ensuring our state lives within its means when crafting the budget, and supporting our rural and vocational school programs.

This week, we celebrate Statehood Day. On Sunday, Dec. 11, Indiana turns 200 years old. That’s two centuries full of innovation and history, including how we developed our state’s motto, the Crossroads of America. 

STATEHOUSE (Nov. 22, 2016) – State Rep. Randy Frye (R-Greensburg) joined fellow legislators at the Statehouse today for the Indiana General Assembly’s Organization Day.

Thanksgiving is a time to come together with friends and family to acknowledge all the blessings we have in our lives. Whether this Thursday is filled with food, football or 5K runs, we must remember the less fortunate in our area. It is important to be thankful for what we have while giving back to those in our community. 

Despite the warm weather we are experiencing, we can expect winter and cold temperatures to eventually arrive in Indiana. Our state offers low-income households financial assistance to keep their utilities connected during the winter months through the Energy Assistance Program.

STATEHOUSE (Nov. 4, 2016) – If the weather holds out, paving projects throughout Aurora will be completed by the end of the weekend, according to State Rep. Randy Frye (R-Greensburg). 

A favorite fall activity for many Hoosiers is spending time in the great outdoors hunting. Indiana has always welcomed hunters and hosts more than 300,000 people participating in deer-hunting activities. Before going out to get your fill of the fall game, there is important information to know to better ensure your safety and keep those around you out of harm’s way.

Sadly, one in seven people die in home fires each day in the United States. Don’t become a statistic, it is never too late to implement fire safety practices.

Each year, the Indiana House of Representatives offers opportunities to participate in the legislative process at the Statehouse while gaining hands-on experience through paid internships. Applications for internships with the Indiana House Republicans during the 2017 legislative session are now being accepted. 

To memorialize Sept. 11, 2001, Alan Jackson penned a song titled, “Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning?” Answers to this question vary, but for myself, I vividly remember I was on duty at the fire station when those four planes crashed into the Twin Towers, Pentagon and that lonely field in Pennsylvania, claiming thousands of American lives. Even though 15 years have passed, we are still feeling the effects of that fateful day.

Football season is upon us, which not only means my Sundays are booked until next February, but that I also get to enjoy watching my grandsons grow into great sportsmen. From being a college athlete myself and having a son and daughter-in-law play sports in college, I know that safety always comes first. Winning is great, but safety needs to be the top priority on and off the field.

STATEHOUSE (Aug. 12, 2016) – Four local farms were recognized on Friday with Hoosier Homestead awards for 100 years or more of family farm ownership, according to State Rep. Randy Frye (R-Greensburg).

Police officers, firefighters and emergency medical services play a vital role in our community. Our first responders are always on-call and ready to act when there is a threat to the health and well-being of Hoosiers. These brave men and women who devote their lives to our safety require appropriate equipment and training to do their jobs. 

In the midst of fair season, I wanted to take time to talk about agriculture and how farming has been a way of life since the founding of our state 200 years ago. In fact, our economy thrives off of Indiana’s agriculture industry, bringing in more than $44 billion and employing 190,000 Hoosiers. Indiana is part of the Corn Belt and is one of the leading states for soybean, pork and egg production in the U.S. As a legislator, I know agriculture plays a vital role in our livelihood and I will continue to promote legislation benefiting our farming industry. 

Indiana is celebrating 200 years of statehood. On Dec. 11, 1816, President James Madison signed a congressional resolution admitting Indiana into the Union as the 19^th state. The origin of our state’s name dates back to when settlers first made this territory their home, as it was known as the “The Land of the Indians.”

STATEHOUSE (July 12, 2016) – State Rep. Randy Frye (R-Greensburg) recently accepted the American Legion Distinguished Public Service Award in recognition of his work to help Hoosier veterans.

The Fourth of July is celebrated nationwide in remembrance of our independence from Great Britain long ago, back in 1776. Still to this day we celebrate July 4 with the pomp and circumstance John Adams described to his wife with parades, fireworks and family reunions. Regardless of how this special holiday is celebrated we need to remember the reason behind Independence Day and what led up to the signing of the declaration.

Congratulations to all graduates of the class of 2016! Hard work and dedication from graduating high school students, their teachers, administrators and families deserve recognition.

Indiana has a part-time legislature, but that does not mean being a state representative is a part-time job. The majority of my work takes place during the summer and fall months when I, along with fellow legislators, conduct research, fact-checks and collaborate on potential legislation by serving on interim study committees.

Memorial Day brings families and communities together, whether it be through parades, memorial services, cookouts or the first day spent by the pool. Regardless of how you celebrate Memorial Day, remember to reflect on the sacrifices made by our fallen heroes. 

Currently, our state has three ports operating under the authority of the Ports of Indiana. These ports are ideally situated on the Ohio River and Lake Michigan and serve the world’s most productive industrial and agricultural regions.

The 2016 legislative session is a busy one. Lawmakers are discussing a variety of topics ranging from infrastructure funding, education, veterans affairs and combating drug abuse in our Hoosier state.

The Indiana House of Representatives recently reached the halfway point in this year’s legislative session. The House passed 116 bills, sending them to the Senate for further consideration. Some of the bills being examined by the Senate pertain to funding roads and infrastructure, curbing illegal drug use and supporting Hoosier veterans.

We are ringing in the New Year, a chance for a clean slate and a new beginning. Just days after creating my New Year’s resolution, the 2016 legislative session will begin. Even though this year is a short, 10-week session, many topics and proposals will be discussed by state policymakers. 

Many are gearing up for the holidays with last minute Christmas shopping and decorating. With the unseasonably warm temperatures this past weekend, I was able to hang up my Christmas lights around my house.
