I'm finding some great tips for parents to reinforce after Saturday's bicycle safety training and rodeo. Remind children to:
ride with traffic. One out of every 5 bike crashes is due to riding against traffic. Stop and look before entering a street, especially from a driveway or parking lot. This is the cause of 1/2 of bike fatalities of kids 8 and under. Stop at all stop signs and red lights. Kids often break this rule, especially when riding with friends. Want more tips to keep kids safe on their bikes, come to the Courthouse Square for safety training and a bike rodeo. It's for kids grades K - 8. Sign up at 12:30 and the event starts at 1! Please share with your contacts! See you there!

We're getting ready for the big day, Saturday at 1 p.m. on the square. We hope you are joining us! Kids grades K - 8 bring your bikes and helmets and register for the bike safety training and rodeo and for a chance to win one of two bikes to be given away, courtesy of The Friendship State Bank. The Coolsville Bike Museum will also be hosting their 3rd annual Versailles Bicycle Blast and is planning a sale and swap all day from 8 - 6, with free food, prizes, even a bike ride in the late afternoon. Stop by our booth and learn more about the Versailles Safe Routes to School project, and pick up a copy of Thursday, September 18th's Versailles Republican for a feature story on the project and listen to WRBI on Saturday for a live remote from downtown Versailles from 12 - 3.

Versailles Safe Routes to School
September 8, 2014

Get ready...great things coming to Versailles. Wednesday morning live interview on WRBI at 8:40 am. Open House Wednesday night at 7 pm. and the bike training and rodeo on Saturday, Sept. 20th.

Getting ready for the Versailles Safe Routes to School grades K-8 bike training and rodeo but wanted to share with you the story that I shared with SRTS committee members tonight. I rode through the Tanglewood subdivision and several residents were walking at 8:15 a.m. I went to study the area, take a photo of the sign, but I had conversations with two groups of ladies. One group was a group of retired school employees that walk every day and support SRTS. The other was ...a group of two ladies, who live alone in the area and for several years have met to walk every morning. They do it for the exercise they said, but then as our conversation continued, they talked about if it wasn't for their morning walk, some days they wouldn't see anyone else and it gets kind of lonely. See what sidewalks and biking trails can do for this population, those disabled. Find a friend and walk together...for your health...for your safety...for your friendship!

If you have questions or concerns, please let us know and we will be happy to have someone contact you directly about this five year plan to encourage walking and biking in and around South Ripley Schools. See next week's Versailles Republican for a feature story on the project.

Within 1/2 hour of getting ready for work, and while listening to the news, there were two reports of children being struck by vehicles. One child, in another state, was playing the game "the fugitive" with friends, hiding in a neighborhood, while friends in cars drove around to find her. I suspect while attempting to hide, she may have ran out in front of a car, and is in intensive care at this moment. Another child, from Delhi was stuck by a vehicle just this morning. Get involved with Safe Routes to School. Talk to your kids about the dangers in playing games in around moving vehicles, and plan to attend these upcoming events...Open House tonight, and bike safety and training for kids grades K - 8 on the square on Sat. September 20th. Please forward to your contacts.

Tonight's the Night! Wed., Sept. 10th 7 - 8 p.m.Safe Routes to School Open House in the County Commissioners' room in the Annex Building. Make sure you see the video that I posted last week about the Versailles Bicycle Blast on September 20th. Come out and support your local businesses and organizations in Versailles.

My cousin who lives in North Carolina and who also works for a school just posted something like, "watch the kiddies going back to school whether on foot or on wheels." I was so excited to see this post, and hopefully the post will encourage others to look out for young children, and to remind others to do the same. In my research, I came upon information presented to the House of Representatives and U.S. Senate.
in 2011, more than 23,000 students walking to and from schoo...l were injured due to being struck by a vehicle. That number has been reduced by 33% because of Safe Routes to School projects in communities where sidewalks are built, repaired, bike trails are clearly marked, and traffic signs, education and training are put into place. Versailles...Safe Routes to School is working in your town. Your ideas and voice need to be heard and next week, SRTS is giving you the opportunity to understand the plan for the area around South Ripley Schools. Plan to attend the Public Open House to discuss the efforts of the Versailles Safe Routes to School on Wed, Sept. 10th from 7 - 8 p.m. in the County Commissioners' room in the Annex bldg. Please share and spread the word.

Here is the connectivity plan for Versailles! I hope you can make sense of the great work that's went into the planning of routes that would make the best sense for students and others. Plan to attend the upcoming open house, Wed., September 10th 7 - 8 p.m. at the Courthouse Annex building. There will be much information provided by the Versailles SRTS committee and members of the Green3 consulting firm, concerning better walking and biking trails within a 2 mile radius of the South Ripley Schools. Be a part of the progress! Your input is important to the success of this project!
