Update: – Weekend theft reported at local gas station

Update —The Batesville Police Department has provided more details on the theft that occurred on Saturday. On Saturday.  Shortly after 9:30 pm, Batesville Police Corporal Ryan Metcalf, Patrolman Ethan Back, and Patrolman Brent Wesseler responded to a report of a pickup truck trying to flee BP, located on North State Road 229, after not paying for over $100 of fuel. Upon the arrival of Corporal Metcalf, he located the pickup truck preparing to leave the lot.

Corporal Metcalf immediately initiated a traffic stop on the pickup truck, but it failed to stop and continued onto State Road 229 and then onto the Eastbound entrance ramp of Interstate 74. Once on the entrance ramp of Interstate 74, Corporal Metcalf, Patrolman Back, and Patrolman Wesseler detained the driver, Joseph A. Burnette, 46,  of Decatur, Georgia and the passenger, Amanda L. Stayton, 38, of Ludlow, Kentucky.

After further investigation, it was determined that the pickup truck was stolen from the state of Pennsylvania. At the conclusion of the investigation, Joseph A. Burnette was arrested and charged on allegations of Theft, Resisting Law Enforcement, and Auto Theft. Amanda L. Stayton was arrested and charged on allegations of Theft, False Identity Statement, and an active 2011 warrant out of Dearborn County, Indiana. Both individuals were incarcerated at the Ripley County Jail.

 

Original Story — Around 9:30 pm on Saturday, the Batesville Police Department responded to a dispatch of theft at the BP station located on State Route 229 just off of I-74. Police say that the investigation is still ongoing in this case and details cannot be released at this time but noted that an arrest was made in the case.
