(Versailles, IN) – May is Historic Preservation Month and Indiana DNR’s Division of Historic Preservation and Archeology is celebrating.

The 2024 theme is “Indiana’s Scholastic Gymnasiums.”

This week, DNR featured Tyson Auditorium in Versailles among Indiana’s great basketball venues.

The gym was completed in 1950 and designed in the Art Deco style as an addition to the 1938 Versailles School.

With a seating capacity of 1,850, Tyson was home to the famed 1953 and ’54 Milan Indians to accommodate large crowds.

Tyson Auditorium and Versailles School were listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.

Indiana’s fascination with basketball goes back almost to its invention in 1892.

“Hoosier Hysteria” led to the construction of large gymnasiums in both urban and rural school districts to showcase the state’s enthusiasm for and dedication to the sport.
