Trailer a total loss after I-74 fire

New Point, IN—On Thursday evening a little before 5 pm, a trailer caught fire on I-74 near the 141-mile marker.  New Point Community Volunteer Fire Department responded to the fire along with assistance from the Greensburg Fire Department.

New Point Fire Chief Mark Baldwin stated that after speaking with the driver, the cause of the fire so far has been determined to have initiated from the truck’s brakes.  The driver reported seeing smoke and then flames once it began to spread.  The driver was able to disengage the semi-truck from the trailer to avoid additional damages.  The trailer contained furniture from 3 family’s homes.  Chief Baldwin said the trailer is a total loss.

I-74 was shut down for roughly 3 hours for clean up and investigation.
