Traffic stop leads to car theft charge

North Vernon, IN—The North Vernon Police Department arrested Dustin Stump, 36,  and Matthew Farlin, 33, both of Michigan, on Tuesday after they fled from a traffic stop and abandoned the stolen vehicle they were in.

NVPD noticed a Jeep Cherokee with an equipment violation and initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle. When police made contact with the driver, the suspects supposedly sped away. Officers chased them and eventually located both men as they were running across a street. The duo was stopped and detained. Items in their possession allegedly linked them to the jeep which had been reported stolen from Michigan.

The Jeep had damage to the steering column and had a bottle of what appeared to be bottled urine, a misdemeanor in Indiana.

Stump and Farlin were arrested on multiple preliminary charges including allegations of resisting law enforcement, possession of a stolen vehicle, and criminal mischief.
