Thomas E. Baumer, age 82 of Oldenburg, Indiana, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, August 10, 2024, with his family by his side. Born October 6, 1941, in Batesville, Indiana, he is the son of Roy and Luella (Nee: Schoetmer) Baumer. He married Becky Voegele on September 28, 1963, at St. Anthony Church in Morris, Indiana. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Oldenburg Conservation Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3183 Auxiliary, and the Batesville Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #1130.
Tom and Becky raised their 4 children in Batesville on Park Avenue, and Tom finally got to return to his beloved Oldenburg after building a house there in 1992.
Tom worked as a lead inspector for the Hill Rom company in Batesville, retiring in 2003. He spent most of his working life at Hill-Rom but had numerous part-time jobs during his younger years. He bartended on Saturday nights at Fireside Inn, painted houses and worked at a local gas station. Tom and his brother John also started The Baumer Candle Company, but after many years of what was supposed to be a hobby that turned into more of a job, they decided to wax it.
Tom was a simple man who enjoyed family, front porch sitting, Hudephol beer back in the day, owned many different motorcycles, and was a Batesville Eagles and VFW regular. Tom was also a loyal fan of the grandkids’ sporting events and their other activities.
Tom could come across as a bit grumpy sometimes fondly being referred to as the Baumer bullhead and usually said what was on his mind. He could be trusted with any secret and was a truthful man. He had a very warm heart for children and was especially proud of and had a special relationship with each of his grandchildren. When he got a bit worked up, you definitely would hear a “God Dammit” or two. It was always a great time listening to Tom and his brothers and friends talk about the old days and their mischievous adventures. They could remember every car they owned and usually wrecked.
Tom will be sadly missed by his wife of 60 years Becky of Oldenburg, daughters Kim (Mike) Manlick of Westfield, Indiana and Connie (Kyle) Chaffee of Batesville; sons Mike (Kris) Baumer and Dan (Marcy) Baumer, all of Batesville; brother John (Rita) Baumer of Oldenburg; grandchildren Ellie, Ike, and Tori Manlick, Tom and Jack Chaffee, Ben Baumer and Bailey (Alex) Maloney, and Max and Alex Baumer, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents Roy and Luella, Tom was preceded in death by his sister Marlene Mollaun and brother Rocky Baumer.
Visitation will be held Friday, August 16th, from 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., at Holy Family Church in Oldenburg. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 12 p.m., at the church, with Fr. Carl Langenderfer O.F.M. officiating. The burial will be in the church cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Margaret Mary Health Foundation Hospice or Holy Family Church.
