Supermajority at Statehouse No More

(Statehouse) – Indiana Republicans no longer have the supermajority in the General Assembly.

However, Republicans retain the majority in the state’s lawmaking body, winning most of the 29 seats that were open in Tuesday’s General Election.

One of the more high-profile examples of Democrats turning seats long-held by the GOP is Natasha Baker’s defeat of Republican State Sen. Ron Alting.

He announced last month that he would resign due to a theft investigation, but that his name would remain on the ballot.

Alting said that should he win, his seat would be filled through the Republican Party’s vacancy procedures.

But Baker took the victory Tuesday, with 58 percent of the vote.

However, Republicans maintain their majority in both the state House of Representatives and Senate.
