Stephen M. Schwing, 67, Osgood

Stephen M. Schwing, 67, of Osgood, Indiana, passed away on Wednesday, January 19, 2022, in Decatur County Memorial Hospital with his loving family by his side. Steve was born on Friday, August 6, 1954, in Finneytown, Ohio; son of Carl and Lavonna (Myer) Schwing. Steve married his best friend, Phyllis (Goldizen) Schwing on March 16, 1973, and had four daughters to whom he remained a strong, protective, and dedicated father.

Steve was gifted with a natural ability for music, athletics, and enough charisma to be on the big screen. His mechanical abilities, natural curiosity, and desire to serve led him to his 18-year career in the United States Navy. Steve continued to serve his fellow veterans as a long-term volunteer at the Cincinnati and Indianapolis VA Medical Centers. He enjoyed hiking, fishing, traveling (especially to the ocean), and working on his ’67 mustang. He believed strongly in our Lord, serving others, fighting for what you believe in, supporting your loved ones with a dedication that never ends, and setting a fine example through the compassion and empathy that you show for those in need. Steve was born with a strong, fighting spirit that was apparent until his last breath.

Steve will be greatly missed by his wife, Phyllis, of Osgood, Indiana; daughters Carol (David) Bragdon, Stephanie (Chad) Schwing-Stamper, Natalie (Gilbert) Emily, and Sarah (Adam) Fisher; “adopted son” Tony Bauer; Grandchildren Sarah Johnson, Stephen Bragdon, Makiah Stamper, Alexander Stamper, and Dannie Rae Emily; Great grandchildren Teddy Johnson, Jack Johnson, Charlotte Johnson, Kale Bragdon, and Emmett Bragdon; and his close friends Cora and Eddie Bullard.

Steve is preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Lavonna Schwing, brother Carl Schwing, and sisters Debbie and Carol Schwing.

Steve was a private man. As such, his family will hold a private memorial and celebration of life. Steve would want his memory to live on through others in their servitude and willingness to advocate and show compassion for those in need.

Memorials may be given in honor of Steve to the Decatur County Memorial Hospital for their dedicated service to their patients or to the Cincinnati VA Medical Center for their service to our veterans.
