Center Grove slid past Batesville 182-187 in girls golf last evening at Hillcrest. Bulldog sophomore Stella Maple took medalist honors with a 39.
Batesville girls soccer won two at South Dearborn. Hailee Weisenbach scored two goals in the Bulldogs 5-nil win in the varsity contest. And in one half of JV play, it was Batesville over SD 2-nil.
Batesville and East Central split in boys tennis at St. Leon. The Bulldogs won the varsity matchup 4-1; the Trojans claimed the JV match 3-0.
Batesville swept Franklin County in middle school volleyball. It was the Bulldogs over the Wildcats in 7th grade action, 25-11, 25-9. In the 8th grade contest, BMS won, 25-12, 25-15.
The Reds beat the San Diego Padres 4-3 in the middle game of the series in downtown Cincinnati heard last night on WRBI. The game was tied at 2-2 until the bottom of the 8th inning, when Jose Trevino’s bases loaded single to centerfield brought home Elly De La Cruz with the go ahead run. Juan Brito added a sacrifice fly to plate Sal Stewart with the Reds’ fourth run. Brock Burke gets the win in relief to run his record to 6-5. Emilio Pagan gave up a solo homer to Fernando Tatis Jr. in the 9th before nailing down his 20th save. The rubber match of the series is this afternoon. Williamson was activated from the 60-day Injured List on Tuesday. The lefthander spent most of the season on the shelf with left shoulder discomfort. Brito was called up from Triple-A Louisville. He came to the Reds in the August 3 trade deadline deal that sent infielder Nathaniel Lowe to Cleveland. Brito is being called on to fill in while De La Cruz is limited to DH’ing because of a calf issue, and Eugenio Suarez is in Miami taking his U.S. citizenship test. Major League rosters expanded from 26 to 28 players for September.
Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard says the team is sticking behind wide receiver Keenan Allen following his DUI arrest last weekend. Ballard said, “Good people make mistakes.” Allen is expected to play in the Colts’ Week One game against the Baltimore Ravens. Ballard added that he expects backup quarterback Anthony Richardson to remain with the team for the foreseeable future. Richardson had asked for a trade back in the spring.
