South Decatur High School has new varsity football and volleyball coaches heading into the upcoming school year. Aarik Gault takes over the Cougar football program after spending time as a college coach, with stops at Mount Union, Franklin and Hanover. He is a three time National Champion and 14 time conference champion as a player and coach. Gault is a 2002 South Decatur grad…Andie Clark is South Decatur’s new volleyball coach. Clark played for four years at Bethany College in West Virginia, and has three years of club volleyball coaching. Both hires were previously approved by the Decatur County Community School Board.
The Philadelphia Phillies beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-1 in the opener of a three-game series at Great American Ball Park as heard last night on WRBI. Tri-State native and former Indiana Hoosier Kyle Schwarber clubbed his Major League-leading 31st home run of the season in the 3rd inning, a two-run shot off Reds starter Andrew Abbott. Eugenio Suarez accounted for the Reds’ only run with his ninth homer of the year in the 7th inning. Abbott took the loss to fall to 5-5. He went six innings, allowed five hits, three earned runs, struck out eight and did not walk anyone. Phillies righthander Zach Wheeler struck out 14 in seven innings of work. Reds hitters struck out a total of 18 times. The middle game of the series is tonight. All-Star Chase Burns starts for the Reds. He’s 10-1 with a 2.40 ERA. Coverage begins at 6:40 on 103.9 FM.
The Reds have transferred the rehab assignment of third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes from Single-A Dayton to Triple-A Louisville. Hayes has been on the Injured List since May 22 with a bulging disc in his back.
The Indiana Fever’s West Coast road trip continues tonight in Los Angeles against the Sparks. Tipoff is at 10 p.m.
