Oldenburg Academy boys’ soccer downed Triton Central 4-nil last night at The Graveyard. The Twisters improve to 2 and 3.
Batesville girls’ soccer won both the varsity and JV matches against Seymour at the Dawg Pound. It was 9-nil Bulldogs over the Owls in the varsity match, and 3-nil Batesville over Seymour in JV play.
Batesville middle school cross country ran in the 29-team Greensburg Invitational. The Bulldog girls came in fourth while the boys squad finished 13th.
Batesville middle school volleyball took two from St. Nicholas. The Bulldogs won the 7th grade game in two sets, 25-18, 25-19. The BMS 8th graders were victorious in two sets, as well, 25-9, 25-11.
The Cincinnati Reds kicked off the final leg of their West Coast road trip with a 5-0 loss to the San Francisco Giants in a game heard late last night on WRBI. Chase Burns lasted just 3 2/3 of an inning and gave up five earned runs on nine hits with one walk and five strikeouts. The big blow was a three-run homer to centerfield off the bat of Raphael Devers in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Burns takes the loss and is now 14-3 on the season. The Reds offense could only muster five hits against Giants pitching. In tonight’s middle game of the series, Brady Singer (5-11. 4.72 ERA) will make the start for Cincinnati. Coverage begins at 9:15 p.m. on 103.9 FM.
Reds infielder/outfielder Michael Toglia will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a dislocated right shoulder. He suffered the injury while making a diving catch in the Reds 9-0 loss at Arizona last Friday night.
The Cincinnati Bengals released offensive tackle Cody Ford on Monday. Ford, an eighth-year player, signed with the Bengals as an unrestricted free agent during the 2023 offseason. He played in 50 regular-season games with 10 starts for Cincinnati.
Former Bengals tight end CJ Uzomah took to social media to announce his retirement from the NFL after 10 seasons. He signed a one-day contract with the team so he could retire as a Bengal. Uzomah spent the first seven seasons of career in Cincinnati, and was an integral part of the Bengals run to Super Bowl LVI in 2021-22. That season, Uzomah had a career-high 49 catches, 493 yards and five touchdowns. He was the 157th pick in the 2015 NFL Draft out of Auburn.
The clock is ticking for Alec Pierce. The Indianapolis Colts’ $114 million wide receiver remains on the physically unable to perform list (PUP), and the team faces a Sunday deadline to alter his status or be without Pierce for the first four games of the season. Rosters must be trimmed to 53 by Sunday, and that includes teams deciding how to handle players on PUP. If Pierce starts the season on the PUP list, he would have to miss the season’s first four games.
Thousands of people showed up to watch some of the best athletes in Indiana face each other in a revived summer tradition at Victory Field on Monday. Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton helped revive the annual summer softball game to help the Pacers Foundation’s Drive & Dish program. A team assembled by Haliburton faced a team put together by Indianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones.
