Oldenburg Academy edged South Ripley 5-3 in varsity baseball last night at Liberty Park’s Ace Moorman Field. Zach Hoff was the winning pitcher in relief of Twisters starter Clay Eckstein.
North Decatur run ruled Jac-Cen-Del 17-0 in varsity softball. An 11-run 4th inning salted the game away for the Chargers. Carmen Thackery had four hits and drove in four.
Batesville won a three-way middle school golf match with East Central and South Dearborn at Hillcrest. It was the Bulldogs 181, the Trojans 197 and the Knights 229. Stella Maple led BMS by shooting a 39.
The Reds doubled up the Seattle Mariners 8-4 in the opener of their three-game series last night at Great American Ball Park, as heard on WRBI. Austin Hays made his season debut and had the big blow in the bottom of the 5th inning when he clubbed a three-run homer. Gavin Lux went 4-for-4 and drove in two. Scott Barlow got the win in relief for Cincinnati. Former Reds ace Luis Castillo took the loss for the Mariners. Game two of the series is tonight. Hays and infielder Matt McClain were activated from the 10-day injured list yesterday. The Reds also activated relief pitcher Alexis Diaz from the 15-day IL. To make room for those reinforcements, the Reds optioned outfielder Jacob Hurtubise and infielder Noelvi Marte to Triple A Louisville.
