South Decatur, Greensburg team up for winter coat drive

GREENSBURG, IN — Two rival high schools in Decatur County are joining forces for a winter coat drive.

Donated coats will be collected at Saturday night’s South Decatur at Greensburg boys’ basketball game.

Greensburg High School student Kate Acra is one of the coat drive’s organizers and said the idea came while she was performing a community service project.

“A few weeks ago, I was over at the domestic abuse shelter (New Directions) and they were expressing a need for stuff for women and children, and so I thought, ‘What a perfect idea to have a coat drive,’ or something along those lines,” said Acra. “It just so happened that we would be playing our county school and I was like,’ Why don’t we do that before the game?’ so I thought it was the perfect opportunity.

“I think that there is such a need in our community and not a lot of people realize it, so I think it’s great that our two schools are going to come together and help out with this need in our community,” Acra added.

Students from both schools who bring a coat to the game for donation will be admitted free.

Monetary donations will also be accepted to purchase new or gently-used coats.

Tipoff for the varsity game between the Cougars and the Pirates Saturday night is set for 7:30.
