Shirley Ann (nee Herbert) Oehlman age 88 of Sunman passed away Thursday, June 1, 2023, peacefully in her home of 67 years. She was born March 3, 1935, in Greendale Indiana to Raymond and Ozella Herbert. On October 20, 1956, Shirley married the love of her life, Rudolph F. Oehlman at St. John Lutheran Hubbells Corner, Sunman. Shirley graduated from Sunman High School in 1953 and furthered her education at Bethesda Hospital School of Nursing, obtaining her Registered Nurse certification in 1956. She then went to work at Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville, where she worked for nearly 40 years, retiring in 1995.
Shirley was a caring, loving person, always ready to help someone in need. She was a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church Hubbells Corner, where she always stayed active, teaching Sunday School and helping wherever she was needed. She was a member of the women’s organization (WELCA) where she held several positions including treasure for several years. She was also a member of Batesville YMCA Silver Sneaker Group. The Sunman community will always be grateful for Shirley, who along with several others, founded and volunteered for several years with the Sunman Area Life Squad.
When Shirley wasn’t volunteering her time for others she enjoyed sewing, painting and cooking. Her greatest enjoyment in life was her family, always taking the opportunity to spend precious time with her children and grandchildren and yes, cooking for them.
Survived to cherish Shirley’s love and memories are her four children: Amy (Roger) Richards of Matthews, IN; Rachel (Dale) Lutz of Dover, IN; David (Susan) Oehlman of Prattville, AL; Nathan (Deysi) Oehlman of Sunman; brother: Joseph Herbert of Walnut Creek; grandchildren: Abby (Scott) Ruwe, Randy (Amanda) Lutz, Heidi (Kyle) Howe, Gretchen (Branden) Kooiman, Jennifer (Chris) Zigler, Laura (James Klemz) Oehlman and Edward (Amy) Oehlman; 11 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Rudolph F. Oehlman; parents, Raymond and Ozella Herbert, and her infant brother, Timothy Herbert.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 6, 2023, 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm and Wednesday June 7, 2023, 9:00 am to time of service at 10:00 am. All visitations and service will take place at St. John Lutheran Church (Hubbells Corner) 12523 North Dearborn Rd. Sunman, IN. Burial will follow service at Evangelical Union Cemetery.
