Shelby County, IN — A Shelby County Sheriff’s deputy lost his life in a motorcycle crash early Wednesday morning on I-74.

Indiana State Police troopers say 37-year-old Jay L. Griffith Jr. was off-duty at the time of the crash and was participating in a multi-state motorcycle ride with a number of other motorcyclists.

The ride had just started in Shelbyville when the wreck took place.

When troopers and Shelby County deputies arrived on the scene they found Griffith pinned under the motorcycle, he was unconscious and unresponsive.

Despite life-saving efforts by first responders, Griffith was pronounced dead at the scene.

A preliminary investigation by ISP Crash Reconstructionists determined Griffith was westbound on I-74 and exited onto the ramp to State Road 9.

For unknown reasons, he applied his brakes and began to skid.

The motorcycle fell over and Deputy Griffith was trapped underneath.

ISP says he was wearing a helmet.

The investigation is ongoing.
