Scammers Pretending to be Deputies

(Decatur County, IN) – Authorities are warning of yet another scam in our area in which someone pretends to be with a local sheriff’s office while trying to get your personal information and separate your from your money.

The Decatur County Sheriff’s Office says that someone has been contacting people, claiming to be Lt. Coleman with the agency.

Deputies emphasize there is no Lt. Coleman on staff at the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office.

Law enforcement officers will never ask for you to make a payment to avoid arrest over the phone, or by text message, and no legitimate agency or organization will demand you pay via crypto currency, gift cards, phone apps, pre-paid debit card, by clicking on a bar code, or scanning a QR code.

The sheriff’s office warns that you should not provide your information or make a payment to the scammers.

Instead, you should verify any caller’s information by contacting law enforcement directly from a number you find from a reputable source.

If you have been the victim of a similar crime, you’re urged to call the DCSO non-emergency number at (812) 663-8125.

Meanwhile, deputies say to get the most current information, download the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office app to submit tips, view current inmate lists, sheriff sale information and more.
