Sara (Richie) Hughes, 81, of Milan passed away Thursday, July 25, 2024, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lawrenceburg. Sara was born on Wednesday, February 24, 1943, in Hardburly, Kentucky; daughter of Jason and Anna (Combs) Richie. Sara married the love of her life, Robert “Bob” Hughes, on February 16, 1980, and he survives her. Sara was a schoolteacher for many years. She taught in Milan for 19 years, and also previously taught in Ohio. Sara was a member of the Hope Baptist Church where she enjoyed helping with Sunday school, bible study, and helping with church functions. She was also a member of the Indiana State Teachers Association and Ripley County Retired Teachers Association. She loved to do volunteer work for children such as the Good New Club and taking children to the zoo. In her free time Sara enjoyed reading, quilting, gardening, and listening to the Delta Blues. Most of all Sara loved her family, especially her grandchildren.
Sara will be missed by her husband Robert “Bob” Hughes of Milan; son Joseph (Emily) Hughes of Lawrenceburg; brothers Richard (Jane) Richie of Milan and Roy Richie of Milan; sister Virginia Wilson of Atlanta, Georgia; nephews Jason Richie, John Richie, Doug Tucker, Pat McAdams, and Joe McAdams; nieces Karen Wilson, Cherie Kuhlmeier, and Donna Correa; and grandchildren Aliyah, Coleman, and Malakai Hughes.
Sara was preceded in death by her father Jason Richie in 1966; mother Anna Richie in 2014; brother John Richie; sisters Margaret McAdams and Eleanor Ritter; brother-in-law Bill Wilson; nephews Stephen Richie, Doug Richie, and Kirk Ritter; and niece Terry Tucker.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 11:00 AM- 12:00 PM, Saturday, August 10, 2024, at the Laws-Carr-Moore Funeral Home in Milan. A service will immediately follow at 12:00 PM with Pastor Jack Bible officiating. Memorials may be given in honor of Sara to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Ripley County Humane Society.
