Saints And Cardinals Battle In Hoops

The St. Nicholas Boys 7th and 8th-Grade Basketball teams hosted St. Louis Monday Evening at Oldenburg Academy. 

The 7th Grade Saints were victorious over the Cardinals by a score of 35-28. 

The 8th Grade Saints held a 9 point lead at halftime, but the Cardinals came back to tie the game at 30 at the end of regulation.  In overtime, the Saints fell short by a score of 36-34 in an exciting game.

The 8th Grade SLS Cardinals visited the St. Nicholas Saints at Oldenburg Academy on Monday, December 7th winning 36-34 in overtime. 

The Cardinals fell behind in the 1st half with the score 19-10 at halftime.  During the 2nd half, the Cardinals slowly clawed their way back into the game.  Adam Meer hit a big three-point shot down the stretch and the Cardinals played really good defense to force the game into overtime.  During the overtime session, the Cardinals out-dueled the Saints earning themselves a 36-34 victory!  The Cardinals are 3-5 on the season and move to 2-0 in overtime games. 

Henry Wanstrath led the Cardinals with 12 points and helped keep the Saints leading scorer at halftime to zero 2nd half points.  Meer ended up with 9 points bettering his career-high for the 2nd straight game.  Christian Mack scored 5 points to go along with 6 rebounds, and Marc Meneses scored a career-high 4 points while gathering 5 rebounds.  Sam Laloge ended up with 4 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 blocks.  Ryan Duerstock rounded out the scoring with 2 points. 

The Cardinals are back in action on Thursday, December 10th when they take on St. Mary’s Aurora at home.

The St Louis 5th Grade Cardinals competed against St Nicholas on Monday, Dec 7th at the St Louis Activity Center. The Cards used stingy defense and were able to corral the visitors by a score of 31 – 0.

The team continues to challenge themselves and use persistent effort to improve until the final whistle. There were multiple scorers in this game, led by Ray Walke with 12 points, Andrew King followed with 11, Sam Dice & Calvin Padgett chipped in 4 apiece and Damien Brelage rounded out the scoring with 2 points. There were multiple players who had stellar defensive effort led by Caleb Harmeyer and Grant Wanstrath.

The Cards record is currently 7 wins against 2 losses with 2 games remaining (Dec 14 vs St Michael (at St Michael School in Brookville) and home on Dec 16th vs Greendale Middle School.
