Ripley County Prosecutor handling police misconduct case in Shelby County

Ripley County Prosecutor Ric Hertel

(Shelby County, IN) – Ripley County Prosecutor Ric Hertel is serving as the special prosecutor in the case of an 18-year Indiana State Police veteran facing misconduct and perjury charges in Shelby County.

Master Trooper Jeremy Basso was arrested Wednesday night and charged in Shelby County Court on one count of Perjury and one count of Official Misconduct (both Level 6 felonies).

The charges stem from an ISP investigation that alleges Basso gave false information during a sentencing hearing in Shelby County Court on March 16, 2023, for a suspect who was previously found guilty of driving while intoxicated and crashing into Basso’s parked police cruiser in a construction zone on I-74 near Shelbyville on June 18, 2021.

During the onset of the investigation, a special prosecutor was requested by the Shelby County Prosecutor’s Office to oversee this case.

Hertel was selected and has been engaged with State Police investigators throughout the process.

Basso is being held in the Shelby County Jail.

He has been placed on administrative leave without pay.
