RUSHVILLE, Ind. – A Rush County woman is scheduled to appear in court Monday accused of stealing money from the company she was employed with.
A lengthy investigation led police to arresting Clarissa Spilman on suspicion of felony theft.
Spilman had been employed as an accountant at Smith Implements, Inc. in Rushville since the 1990’s.
According to the Rushville Republican, when the company was informed an outside audit would be performed in the fall of 2013, Spilman notified them that she had stolen money for a substantial time.
The audit process revealed that several hundred thousand dollars were missing, the newspaper reports.
Investigators say she had taken hundreds of checks from the implement business and used them for personal expenses.
Police and company officials are trying to figure exactly how much money is missing as they say it could be more than half a million dollars.
