The Greensburg Pirates traveled to Franklin County to take on the Wildcats in EIAC play and fell 6-4 in double overtime.
The Pirates came out to a slow start by allowing 2 Franklin County goals in the first 10 minutes. After the Pirates settled in, they got a few scoring chances through the play of senior forward, Vincent Pavy and senior outside midfielder Nicholas Zapfe. The Pirates were able to possess and play through the middle to Zapfe on the outside and it lead to many good scoring opportunities for the Pirates. Zapfe lead Greensburg with 7 shots, 6 of them being on goal. Freshman Grayson Newhart had 4 shots on goal for the Pirates as well. Franklin County was able to score one more before half to push the score to 3-0.
As the second half came to a close, Greensburg finally found the back of the net with less than 10 minutes to go in the half. Nicholas Zapfe’s shot ricocheted off the far post and freshman, Grayson Newhart was able to follow and score. The second half was more successful for the Pirates as they saw many scoring opportunities, starting with a penalty kick that was put in by Vincent Pavy. As the Pirates trailed 3-2, Greensburg continued on the attack and Grayson Newhart was able to score his second goal on an assist from Nicholas Zapfe to tie it up 3-3. After letting up a 4th goal, the Pirates stayed on the attack, this time, Zapfe took it himself to beat the keeper and tie it up 4-4.
That took the Pirates into overtime where they were able to hold strong through the first 7 minute period, only to allow the game winning Franklin County goal off of a penalty kick, 3 minutes into the second overtime. Franklin County scored again to push the score to 6-4. The Pirates fall to 0-3 on the season.
