(Versailles, IN) – More than 2,000 people have signed an online petition that calls for preserving the Versailles State Park Lake.

Petition organizers say insufficient funding and maintenance have put the lake at risk.

“The lake and dam have not received the required maintenance needed to ensure it remains clean, safe, and sustainable for activities such as fishing, non motorized boating, and a home to treasured wildlife observation,” reads part of the petition on Change.org. “Maintenance efforts have not taken place due to insufficient or reallocated funds for overall park care. This neglect is leading to long-term ecological damage, aging facilities, and decline in tourist interest, adversely impacting local businesses and the community at large.”

They’re pushing for immediate action by state lawmakers and others to allocate necessary funds to preserve and maintain the lake and its surrounding areas.

The aim is investments in necessary repairs, regular upkeep and improvement projects that will enhance the park’s offerings, promote sustainable tourism, and ensure a healthy environment for future generations, according to petitioners.
