Westport, IN –One person is dead and two others were hospitalized following a three-vehicle head-on collision on State Road 3 north of Westport Friday evening.
Decatur County Sheriff’s deputies say the driver of a northbound vehicle tried to pass a semi and struck a southbound vehicle head-on.
The northbound vehicle then hit the semi before coming to rest in the southbound lanes.
The occupants of both vehicles were trapped in the wreckage and had to be extricated.
The driver of the southbound vehicle, 71-year-old Donald Lee Smith, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the northbound vehicle and a passenger were taken to Decatur County Memorial Hospital for treatment.
The semi-driver was not injured.
The crash remains under investigation.
In addition to the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office, agencies involved in the investigation include the Westport Police Department, the Decatur County Community School Corporation Resource Officer, the Indiana State Police Crash Reconstruction Team, the Westport and Letts volunteer fire departments, Decatur County EMS, the Decatur County Communications Center, and the Decatur County Coroner’s Office.
