South Ripley will host a new boys junior varsity basketball tournament on December 31st with a tie to the South Ripley past. The “Ol’ Coach Classic” will feature four JV teams with direct connections to Gus Moorhead, a former South Ripley coach and principal and an Indiana Basketball Hall of Famer.
Those teams and connections to Gus Moorhead include: the Edgewood JV coached by grandson Bradley Moorhead; the Hauser JV coached by grandson Trent Moorhead; the Milan JV with daughter Jane Rogers, Milan School Superintendent; and the South Ripley JV with son Rob Moorhead, South Ripley School Superintendent.
To bring even more nostalgia to the event, the tournament will be held at Tyson Activity Center, formerly known as Tyson Auditorium where the Ol’ Coach’s Raider teams played their home games.
The New Year’s Eve game times include: Hauser and Milan at 9 am, Edgewood and South Ripley at 10:30; the consolation game at noon and the championship at 1:30. Tickets will be sold at the door and concessions will be available.
