Richmond police officer dies; upgraded charges expected against suspect

Richmond, IN — Richmond police officer Seara Burton passed away Sunday night.

Officer Burton was shot and seriously wounded during a traffic stop on August 10, and never regained consciousness.

She was taken off life support on September 1 and moved from Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio to a hospice facility in the Richmond area, where she passed away.

Murder charges are expected to be filed against the suspect.

Funeral arrangements for Officer Burton are pending.

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb issued the following statement on Officer Burton’s passing:

Our hearts are heavy as we grieve alongside Officer Seara Burton’s family, colleagues, loved ones, and the Richmond community she so nobly served. Officer Burton dedicated four years and her life to the Richmond Police Department and lived the oath she took to serve and protect to the fullest.

“Janet and I send our condolences to Officer Burton’s family and loved ones as they search for peace and strength from a power greater than all we can muster.”
