North Decatur varsity softball fell behind early and couldn’t recover in an 11-1 loss to Union County on Tuesday.
The offense started early for the Patriots, scoring 3 runs in the first inning, thanks to a home run by Annalea Adams and a single by Bailey Mathews.
Heading into the bottom of the fifth, the Patriots led 6-1. They would go on to score five runs in the inning to put the 10-run mercy rule into effect, giving Union County the victory. The big inning for the Patriots came thanks to singles by Shelby Hill and Harly Pilgrim and doubles by Mathews and Whitney King.
Mathews earned the victory in the circle for Union County. Mathews surrendered one run on two hits over five innings, striking out seven and walking zero.
Sarah Swain took the loss for North Decatur. The lefthander allowed 16 hits and 11 runs over four and two-thirds innings, striking out one and walking one.
Ally Whitaker and Kennedy Stier all had one hit to lead the Chargers .
