Oldenburg Academy Students In Sports (OASIS) President Patrick Kolks, ’10, announced the class of the 2024 Ammann-Brinkmoeller Athletic Hall of Fame: Matthew “Matty” Hurm (2015), Justin Ahaus (2012), and Coach Gary “Ace” Moorman. They will be inducted on Saturday, January 4th, in between the junior varsity and varsity girls’ basketball game, at approximately 7:15 PM.
Matthew “Matty” Hurm (2015)
Matthew “Matty” Hurm, a 2015 graduate of Oldenburg Academy, was an outstanding athlete, excelling in soccer, basketball, and baseball. He was a key contributor to the success of each of these teams, particularly in soccer and basketball. In soccer, Hurm was a three-year starter at center back, helping the team to two sectional championships and a regional title. On the basketball court, Hurm set multiple records, including the highest career free throw percentage (79.03%) and a perfect 13-for-13 performance at the line against Shawe Memorial. He also ranked in the top 10 in scoring, rebounding, assists, steals, free throws made, three-pointers made, and blocks.
After graduating from Oldenburg, Hurm attended the University of Indiana Kelley School of Business, where he earned a degree in marketing, professional sales, and operations, with a minor in Spanish. He currently resides in Batesville with his wife, Regan Hurm (’15), and their daughter, June Barbara.
Justin Ahaus (2012)
Justin Ahaus, a 2012 graduate of Oldenburg Academy, made a lasting impact on the Twisters’ baseball program. As a left-handed pitcher, he formed a dynamic pitching duo with current Hall of Famer Trevor Stacey. Ahaus won the team’s pitching award in both 2011 and 2012 and ranks in the top five in several career categories, including innings pitched, ERA, strikeouts, and wins. At the plate, he also ranks in the top five in on-base percentage, at-bats, hits, batting average, walks, and doubles. Ahaus was part of the 2010 baseball sectional championship team.
After Oldenburg, Ahaus attended Marian University, graduating in 2016 with a degree in marketing. He currently works for Baylor Trucking and resides in Guilford.
Coach Gary “Ace” Moorman
Coach Gary “Ace” Moorman led the Twisters’ boys’ varsity basketball team for 13 years, compiling a record of 137-113 and winning two sectional championships (2014 and 2020). His 2014 team won Oldenburg Academy’s first-ever sectional title, defeating Hauser (78-62), Jac-Cen-Del (61-56), and Rising Sun (53-37). The 2020 sectional title was memorable for many reasons, including a thrilling comeback victory over Hauser in the first round (42-39). The Twisters then defeated Jac-Cen-Del (63-43) and Morristown (54-46) to claim the championship. Unfortunately, the regional game was canceled due to COVID-19, but the team ended the season on a six-game winning streak.
Moorman has coached seven All-State players during his tenure: Matt Moorman (2014, 2015), Ben Kinker (2017), Jake Johnson (2019, 2020), and Andrew Oesterling (2020, 2021). Additionally, Coach Moorman served as an assistant baseball coach under OA Hall of Famer Doug Behlmer, contributing to the 2010 sectional championship.
Moorman is currently a teacher at Oldenburg Academy and resides in Batesville with his wife, Mary.
A Message from Patrick Kolks
“Every year, I feel a strong personal connection with our Hall of Fame inductees, and this year is no different,” said Patrick Kolks, OASIS Athletic Boosters President. “Matty Hurm was part of the baseball team during my first year as an assistant coach; I had the privilege of making the final out in the 2010 sectional championship game with Justin Ahaus; and I played two years under Coach Moorman. I am incredibly excited to share this moment with these three extraordinary individuals.”
