BATESVILLE, IN — Schmidt Bakery shattered the record for sales of Cherry Thing-A-Lings again this year.
Clem and Bertie Schmidt and company at the downtown Batesville bakery sold 199,584 of the sweet treats – or 16,632 dozen – during sales to the general public last Thursday through Monday.
The fritter-type donut with cherries inside and topped with a cherry glaze is only available during Presidents Day weekend in a nod to the tale of the first President of the United States George Washington chopping down a cherry tree.
Last year, Schmidt Bakery sold 164,160 Cherry Thing-A-Lings or 13,680 dozen.
