Nancy Lee Cory

Nancy Cory

Nancy Lee Cory, age 85, departed this life on Thursday, June 9, 2016 at her residence in Batesville.  Nan was born in Rhinelander, Wisconsin on May 19, 1931, to Jack and Rimah (Brandenburg) Cory.  She spent her early years in Rhinelander where her father was the editor of the Rhinelander Daily News.  That northern Wisconsin lifestyle undoubtedly led to her lifelong love for the outdoors, fishing and animals – she was never without a dog and usually had a cat or two thrown in for good measure.

Nan attended junior high and high school in Columbus, Indiana.  After high school she took a factory job for one year to earn money for college.  She entered Indiana University in the fall of 1951, graduating in 1955 with a B.S. in Physical Education, Health and Recreation.  She taught physical education at Connersville High School for eleven years.  After receiving her master’s degree in guidance and counseling at Miami University she was hired as a guidance counselor at Union County High School in Liberty, Indiana in 1966.  She served in that position for 27 years, retiring in 1993 as the Director of Guidance Counseling.

Nan lived in Brookville for nearly all 38 years of her teaching.  Throughout Nan’s life, one of her greatest delights was hearing from former students.  She moved to Batesville in 2005.  Nan wasn’t much of a cook, but she managed to convert that deficiency into a positive by turning her restaurant visits into opportunities to socialize.  Always upbeat, she loved to chat with the staffs of area dining establishments and learn about their families, pets and children.  Nan was a longtime member of Tri-Kappa and the Daughters of the American Revolution.  She also enjoyed her membership in the Ripley County Retired Teachers Association.

Survivors include an uncle, Elmer Hoehn of Jeffersonville, Indiana and cousins Pat Hoehn, also of Jeffersonville, and Kathy (David) Gilmore of Houston, Texas.  Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by long-time companion Virginia “Ginny” Krause.

Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday, June 14, 2016 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Cook Rosenberger Funeral Home, 929 Main Street, Brookville.  The Memorial service, officiated by Pastor Curtis Bond, will begin at 7 p.m.
