Mrs. Irene “Granny” Castle (Bowman) Martin, age 96, was born on December 19, 1927 in Radar Creek, Kentucky to Clifton and Ella Mae (Robinson) Bowman. She was united in marriage to Lewis Martin on June 1st, 1948 in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. From this union were born two daughters, Patsy and Judy. Irene lived in Bennington, Indiana for 35 years. She loved her community and most of all loved visiting with her community on her front porch. She was known as the “porch lady.” She always said, “Be kind to each other and love the Lord.” She loved the Lord as much as her family and friends. Granny was a member of Brushy Fork Baptist Church in Canaan, Indiana for over 60 years. She loved gardening and enjoyed discussing gardening “how to’s” to those that sought her advice. Irene passed away at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, July 6, 2024, at the St. Elizabeth Dearborn Hospital in Lawrenceburg, Indiana.
Irene leaves behind her daughter, Patsy M. Eaves of Lawrenceburg, IN; her son-in-law, Steve Spurlock of Lawrenceburg, IN; her 4-grandchildren, Mike (Kelley) Eaves of Aurora, IN, Jason Eaves of Aurora, IN, Justin (Sarah) Spurlock of Castle Rock, CO and Jennifer (Charlie) Simmons of Castle Rock, CO; her 10-great-grandchildren, Bailey, Max and Luke Eaves, Ben Rains, Alexandra and Samantha Eaves, Cayson Spurlock, Adelia Jude and Montgomery and Charleigh Mae Simmons; her sister, Brenda Brown of Manchester, KY; her brother, Otheo Bowman of Manchester, KY and many nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind many dear, close and supportive friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clifton and Ella Mae (Robinson) Bowman; her husband, Lewis Martin, died May 29, 1994; her daughter, Judy Spurlock, died March 2, 2016; her great-grandchildren, Max Eaves and Montgomery Simmons; her sisters, Pauline Turner, Virginia Hacker and Evelyn Banks and her brothers, Clinton, Robert and Virgil.
Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m., Friday, July 12, 2024, at the Brushy Fork Baptist Church, 12840 North Brushy Fork Church Road, Canaan, Indiana 47224.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Friday, July 12, 2024, at the Brushy Fork Baptist Church, 12840 North Brushy Fork Church Road, Canaan, Indiana 47224.
Interment will follow in the Pleasant Cemetery, Pleasant, Indiana.
