Mr. Derek Wade Smith, age 29, of Vevay, Indiana, entered this life on November 16, 1986, in Cincinnati, Ohio, the loving son of, Bradley Jay and Lisa Claire (Schatzman) Smith. He was raised in Hanover, Indiana where he was a 2005 graduate of Southwestern High School. Derek was a straight A honor roll student and was active in basketball, soccer and head of student council. Derek attended Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky and Ive Tech Community College in Madison, Indiana. Derek was employed as a mill operator for Sacoma Machine and Tool in Madison, Indiana for 2 years. He was later employed as a cook for Roxano’s Restaurant in Vevay, Indiana where he worked alongside his mother. He was currently employed for the Riverhouse Bar & Grill in Vevay, Indiana. Derek resided in the Vevay community for the past several years where he made many lifelong friendships. Derek enjoyed golfing, basketball, kayaking, fishing and spending time with his family and friends. Derek’s smile, his big heart and sense of humor could light up an entire room. His memories will live on within our hearts. Derek will be dearly missed by his loving family and his abundance of friends that he made over the years. The past two and half weeks Derek put up a courageous fight with his family and friends beside him. “I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7. Derek passed away at 6:37 pm, Sunday, September 4, 2016, at the University of Louisville Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.
Derek will be dearly missed by his loving mother: Lisa Claire (Schatzman) Smith and her companion: James Miller of Vevay, IN; his father: Bradley Jay Smith of Braidwood, IL; his brother: Quentin Smith and his companion: Heather Grubbs of Vevay, IN; his sisters: Lani and Lauren Smith of Braidwood, IL; his nephew: Kendrick Smith of Vevay, IN; his maternal grandmother: Stella Breedlove of Hanover, IN; his paternal grandparents: Marge and Ed Smith of Braidwood, IL;his aunts and uncles: Kristina Sarver and her husband: Jeff of Madison, IN, Anthony Schatzman, Jr. of Hanover, IN, Jimmy Schatzman of Bethel, OH, Jimmy Scott and his wife: Kathy of Hamersville, OH, Danny Scott and his wife: Cathy of Jamestown, ND and Jeff Smith and his wife: Bonnie of Braidwood, IL.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather: Anthony Schatzman, Sr.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, September 8, 2016, at 7:00 pm, by Bro. George A. Severn, at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana 47043.
