Man arrested, charged in fatal August crash near Burney

(Decatur County, IN) – A Bartholomew County man has been arrested in connection with a deadly single-vehicle rollover crash that happened on the 10,000 block of West County Road 100 South near Burney on August 16.

The Decatur County Sheriff’s Office says 32-year-old Bearette Nicyle Messina was arrested Friday and charged with Causing Death while Operating a Vehicle with a Specified Amount of Alcohol (Level 4 felony).

Investigators say Messina was behind the wheel when the vehicle crashed, killing 34-year-old Danelle Renae Mills, also of Bartholomew County.

She was pronounced dead at the scene while Messina was trapped in the wreckage until he was cut out of the vehicle and flown to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment of serious injuries.

The Decatur County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Burney Volunteer Fire Department, Letts Fire/EMS, Decatur County EMS, the Greensburg Fire Department, Decatur County Dispatch, the Decatur County Coroner’s Office, the Indiana State Police Accident Reconstruction Team, and Statflight 2 Air Ambulance.
